Neighbourhood-scale Solutions

Implementing integrated district-level strategies that merge decarbonisation with improved livability allows the real estate sector to drive systemic change and enhance community-wide benefits.

The Challenge

Accelerating the green transition requires change at scale and an approach that supports the transition of all assets.

While progress is being made to coordinate delivery, the current approach centres on frameworks or roadmaps that include significant milestones and prudent policy recommendations. However, no one roadmap covers all necessary stakeholders and gaps remain with respect to the actual implementation and delivery on the ground of what is proposed. Therefore, more focus on delivery through stakeholder mobilisation, coordination and actions from industries and governments is crucial for the effective delivery of a green transition.

Advisory Services Panel Report: Berlin - Turning Risk into Opportunity: Decarbonising Stranded Assets at a Neighbourhood Scale

The built environment accounts for approximately 37% of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in Europe. Decarbonising this sector is essential to meeting climate targets and limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

Recognising this challenge, ULI convened a group of multidisciplinary experts for an Advisory Services Panel (ASP) in Berlin to develop scalable solutions for reducing emissions in the built environment, tackling risks of asset stranding, and ensuring a just transition for all communities.
