Owner Occupier Alignment
By aligning landlords, tenants and service providers, the industry can more effectively address emissions from occupied spaces, which represent a major portion of global carbon emissions for the built environment.
The Challenge
Buildings account for approximately 40% of global carbon emissions, with more than half stemming from operational emissions largely tied to occupiers’ energy use.
This presents a complex challenge for landlords, as occupier-controlled spaces form a significant portion of their scope three emissions, which they must address to meet net-zero commitments. Effective decarbonisation of leased property portfolios depends on stronger alignment between owners and occupiers.
Driving Better Owner-Occupier Alignment
ULI C Change Owner Occupier Community of Practice
We bring owners, occupiers and service providers together in an Owner Occupier Community of Practice (OOCOP) to collaborate on shared sustainability challenges in real estate. Meeting every six weeks, the group engages through hands-on workshops to build trust, exchange knowledge and identify opportunities for collective action. exchange best practices, offer opportunities for learning and generate solutions to shared challenges.
The community takes an agile, iterative approach to explore key areas of enquiry, co-design prototype solutions, and drive innovation that can support wider sector transformation.
The OOCOP have identified three key areas of enquiry:
The Role of Property Managers
Embodied Carbon in Retrofits
The Collective Occupier Voice
